ICS3U: Introduction to Computer Science (Grade 11, University Preparation)
ICS3U is not a strict prerequisite for most engineering programs. The probability of admission changes from year to year depending on how many students apply. Waterloo’s published intake table lists Software Engineering and Electrical Engineering with a minimum competitive average in the low-to-mid 90s. Chemical, Civil, and Environmental Engineering sit in the mid-to-high 80s.
The University of Toronto’s engineering admissions FAQ confirms that averages are calculated using only the five prerequisite subjects, not your full six-course average. Common Grade 11 Mistakes That Hurt Engineering Applications Later
Taking the college stream by mistake in one science. Some students take SCH3U but accidentally register for the college-stream physics course, assuming “physics is physics.” College-stream science does not lead into SPH4U.
Confirm every science course code is the “U” (university) stream, not “C” (college) or “M” (mixed).
Choosing MCF3M instead of MCR3U. MCF3M suits students heading to college diplomas or business programs, but it does not lead into MHF4U. A student who takes MCF3M and later chooses engineering usually has to add MCR3U through summer school, which costs time and money.
Dropping chemistry or physics because “my program doesn’t need it.” Every major Ontario engineering faculty requires both Grade 12 chemistry and physics, no matter which discipline a student later picks. Dropping either science in Grade 11 removes engineering as an option.
Underestimating how much English marks matter. ENG4U is one of the five or six courses used to calculate the admission average at most schools. A weak Grade 11 English foundation can quietly drag down the overall average.

What to Consider Before Locking In Your Grade 11 Timetable
Choosing the “right” Grade 11 courses is not free of tradeoffs, and an honest guide should say so.
Taking MCR3U, SPH3U, SCH3U, and ICS3U in the same year is a heavy course load. These are four of the most demanding university-stream courses in the Ontario curriculum. Stacking all of them in one semester can hurt marks across the board if a student is not ready for the workload. Some students are better served spreading physics and chemistry across two semesters instead.
Course fees and access also matter. If a student’s school does not offer ICS3U, or an elective conflicts with a science course, online or private-school options may fill the gap. Not every family has the same flexibility here. Switching schools or adding a course mid-year has real costs in time and money.
Finally, admission averages shown above are current ranges, not promises. According to Waterloo Engineering’s own admission page, meeting a published average range does not guarantee a seat.
The Admissions Committee also reviews the Admission Information Form and, for some programs, an online interview. Grades open the door. They do not automatically walk you through it.
