Canada Student Visa: Proof of Funds Requirements

Planning to study in Canada? One of the important steps in your study permit application is showing that you can afford your education and living expenses. You need to demonstrate that you have enough money to pay your tuition fees, cover your daily expenses and travel to Canada.

How Much Money Do You Need?

If you are applying for a study permit to study outside Quebec, the amount you need for living expenses depends on how many family members are included in your application.

For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, the minimum living expense amounts listed are:

  • One person: CAD $23,448
  • Two family members: CAD $29,192
  • Three family members: CAD $35,888
  • Four family members: CAD $43,572

These amounts cover living expenses for one year. You will also need to show that you can pay your tuition fees and transportation costs. If you plan to study in Quebec, check the separate financial requirements for that province.

What Documents Can You Use to Show Proof of Funds?

You can provide financial documents that demonstrate you have access to enough money for your studies. Depending on your situation, these may include:

  • Recent bank statements showing your available funds.
  • Documents confirming an approved student or education loan.
  • A scholarship letter or proof of financial support from a sponsor.
  • Receipts showing tuition fees or housing costs already paid.
  • Other financial documents accepted by Canadian immigration authorities.

Make sure your documents are accurate and clearly show where your funding comes from.

Check the Latest Requirements Before Applying

Financial requirements can change, so it is important to confirm the current amounts before submitting your application. Visit the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website to check the latest proof-of-funds rules and the documents you need.
