How to get your OSSD from USCA Academy

Here at USCA Academy, you can earn your secondary school diploma via in-person or online study. These arrangements are convenient for international students. If you prefer to study on campus, you must get a study permit. If you prefer to study online, you will be in the care of our best teachers, who will deliver the compulsory courses via Zoom.

We recommend studying online if you want to save on living costs. However, we also encourage you to consider in-person study at USCA Academy to experience Canadian life while pursuing your Ontario Secondary School Diploma. It’s also a chance to immerse yourself in the country’s diverse culture at an early stage to minimize culture shock and manage your adjustment period by the time you enter university.

Are you eligible?

Before enrolling at USCA Academy, we want to ensure you are eligible for our Ontario Secondary School Diploma program. All local and international students are welcome to enrol in our high school as long as they fulfill any of the following requirements:

  • Middle school graduates
  • Currently in high school (Grades 9 to 12)
  • Currently pursuing an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, A Level, O Level, or AP Students.
  • Newly high school graduates from another country but requiring additional courses for OSSD

What are the requirements for getting the OSSD?

To earn your OSSD, you must complete 18 credits of compulsory courses here at USCA Academy. These include:

  • 4 English credits
  • 3 Mathematics credits
  • 2 Science credits
  • 1 Canadian Geography credit
  • 1 Canadian History credit
  • 1 Health and Physical Education
  • 1 Arts credit
  • 1 French as a Second Language
  • 5 Civics
  • 5 Career Studies

Additionally, you need optional 12 credits by choosing 1 credit from these groups:

  • Group 1: Social sciences, additional English or a third language, Canadian and world studies, humanities, career education and guidance, or cooperative education.
  • Group 2: The arts, health and physical education, cooperative education, or business studies.
  • Group 3: Grade 11 or 12 science, Grade 9-12 technological education, or cooperative education.

Additional studies

You should also fulfill the following conditions to secure your secondary school diploma:

  • Complete 40 hours of community involvement to foster volunteerism and civic engagement.
  • Pass the OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) to show your literacy skills.
  • Make sure you take courses approved or certified by the Ontario Ministry of Education to count toward credit accumulation.
  • Credits you earn can be recognized or transferred as an aspect of the OSSD program to fulfill the requirements.
