If your goal is to get admitted into some of the best universities in the world, then you need to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)—a certificate granted to secondary school graduates. You can enroll in OSSD courses to earn your diploma.

Obtaining your diploma with OSSD courses

Almost everyone is eligible to apply for the OSSD. This includes middle school graduates, current students in Grades 9 to 12, and International Baccalaureate (IB) program pursuers.

If you’re deemed eligible for the diploma, here are the credits you must complete:

  • 4 credits in English
  • 3 credits in Math
  • 2 credits in Science
  • 1 credit in Canadian History, Canadian Geography, the Arts, Health and Physical Education, and French as a Second Language, respectively
  • 5 credits in Career Studies and Civics, respectively

In addition, you must complete a total of 12 optional credits, at least 40 hours of community involvement, and meet the provincial literacy requirements.

But why is this all necessary? Being an OSSD holder means you can:

  • Attend the best universities

Completing your OSSD courses opens up your world to higher education opportunities inside and outside the country. For instance, you can choose to attend the University of Toronto, York University, and even schools in the US.

  • Gain access to international opportunities

The OSSD is a globally recognized certification. In fact, it is one of the world’s top education systems, which means you can explore careers across the globe.

The OSSD is also required for some trades in Canada including carpentry, plumbing, and construction.

  • Receive high-quality education

OSSD courses are offered by Ontario’s best private schools, allowing you to study in a healthy and productive learning environment. Additionally, continuous assessments are conducted throughout the program, ensuring that you gain the necessary skills to complete a credit.

The OSSD is also a great way to meet fellow students, experienced teachers, and influential mentors who can make your stay in Canada more fulfilling.
